Acid Reflux Diet Guide
Can Your Diet Really Impact Your Heartburn?
Acid reflux/GERD is something that plagues over 19 million people in the United States alone. This happens when the LES (Lower Esophageal Sphincter) weakens or inappropriately opens, enabling stomach acid to reach the esophagus. Acid reflux and heartburn symptoms are often times triggered by certain foods that you are consuming. Therefore, it would be very beneficial to lay out and execute an acid reflux diet to help give yourself the best chance to eliminate the agonizing symptoms that GERD is synonymous for.
Identifying and removing these triggers from your diet CAN yield extremely positive results, and get you on the path to being heartburn free right away.
There are many things that can trigger acid reflux, and your diet is a big player on that list. Here are some of the main things that can cause heartburn / GERD:
- Diet – What you eat plays a big role in regards to acid reflux and heartburn. There are a lot of foods that can cause pretty severe symptoms, therefore, it is very important to implement an acid reflux diet into your life.
- Alcohol – Alcohol is well known to play a large role in relationship to acid reflux symptoms. It causes your LES to relax, allowing stomach acid to enter the esophagus. Alcohol also serves as a contraindication while taking any medication. Both medication and alcohol are metabolized in your liver, and alcohol can cause the liver to work in an attempt to eliminate it from the body, which ultimately leaves the medications in your system to long. This can create a toxic situation, causing an effective medication to become poisonous.
- Heredity – Someone with a family history of GERD is at higher risk to suffer.
- Stress – Stress has been proven to contribute to acid reflux symptoms.
- Medications – Medications from other ailments might work to curb other symptoms, but might trigger acid reflux symptoms.
If you suffer from GERD, and an acid reflux diet is not getting the job done there are some other remedies you can try to help provide some instant help. Below are a few things you can try to help alleviate some of the pain:
- Black Strap Molasses - This is good for both strength and nutrition. It also sticks to the walls of your esophagus, and can actually work to heal and protect.
- Raw Honey – Raw honey works in the same manner as black strap molasses.
- Ginger & Cinnamon – I am not listing these independently because they both work in the same way. Both contain sugar, and that will help to neutralize acid when it comes up. Not only that, but both of these substances also help with digestion, which will ultimately reduce the amount of acid needed to break your foods down, leading to less acid reflux.
For me, the biggest factor in getting my heartburn under control was implementing an acid reflux diet plan. It was not easy, and it did require a lifestyle change. I really enjoyed things like pizza, beer, and fast food. What can I say, I’m a guy!
It is the truth though, I had tried medications like Prilosec OTC, Tums daily, Pepto Bismol, and anything else I could get my hands on that MIGHT be able to help fight these symptoms. Products like Tums and Pepto Bismol just did not work.
Eventually I got married, had kids, and my wife made me see a doctor for these symptoms because it was keeping me up at night, and affecting our life.
The Doctor prescribed me 40mg Nexium, which is pretty strong stuff from my understanding. However, I have never been one to be happy with the thought of taking medication for the rest of my life, so after a while it got old, and I started researching practical and natural ways to get this under control. All of my research led me to an acid reflux friendly diet to help me with this problem. So, I began the agonizing journey of changing my lifestyle.
What I did first was find a diet plan that I could stick to, one that could provide me with some meals I enjoyed eating and at the same time begin to lessen my acid reflux symptoms right away. After doing a little research on the internet I found this diet plan that got me headed in the right direction. Click HERE to see the diet plan I started using. This acid reflux diet gave me a starting point, and something that I could build from.
Things were going well. I was slowly weaning myself from the high doses of medication that my doctor had prescribed me, and my symptoms were steadily improving. However, I had to be extremely careful. Little slip ups whether if was with food or alcohol really set me back, and the pain and sleepless nights of heartburn would creep back into my life, disturbing my daily life at every chance I gave it.
I really wanted to be able to put heartburn behind me for good, while occasionally enjoying some of the things I really enjoyed, like the occasional pizza and beer. How else are you supposed to watch Bears games on Sunday’s without these things?
It was at this point that I started looking online for some products or techniques that might be able to help me kick acid reflux for good, without having to rely on medications.
What I realized is that there is a ton of great information out there right at your fingertips. I did find a lot of great free advice, diet plans, foods to avoid type material and I tried hard to implement each tidbit into my life the best I could.
The real break for me in regards to my acid reflux was when I stumbled across a product called Heartburn No More.
